Pinterest Turned Search Trends Into a Real-Life Practical Magic 2 Experience

Pinterest and Warner Bros. Pictures brought the world of Practical Magic to life with a two-day pop-up in Venice, California, on August 28–29, 2026. But what made the activation interesting wasn't simply the movie theme, it was how Pinterest used real search behavior to determine what fans would actually do inside the event

The activation, created with experiential partner NVE Experience Agency, invited visitors into a physical interpretation of the Owens sisters' magical world through hands-on activities including a DIY herbal apothecary, tarot readings and crystal candle-making. Pinterest described the event as bringing some of its biggest emerging trends "IRL." See Pinterest's original pop-up announcement

Pinterest Didn't Guess What Fans Wanted

Just days before the pop-up, Pinterest released its 2026 Hobbies Trend Report, which identified growing interest in tactile, screen-free activities and two trends that fit Practical Magic almost perfectly: Kitchen Witch and Cosmic Reset.

Searches for "herbal apothecary" increased 595%, while "candle making tutorial" increased 118% and the iconic Practical Magic-inspired "midnight margaritas" increased 140%.

On the spiritual side, searches for "crystals and meanings" grew 606%, while "tarot cards for beginners" jumped 558%.

Instead of simply reporting those trends, Pinterest turned them into physical activities. Visitors could make something, learn something and personalize their experience rather than just pose beside movie signage. Read Pinterest's full 2026 Hobbies Trend Report

That makes the activation a strong example of how brands can turn digital consumer intent into experiential marketing.

Building the World Instead of Advertising the Movie

The activation also worked because the activities naturally belonged inside the Practical Magic universe.

The original 1998 film built much of its identity around the Owens family's home, herbs, spells, candles, food, family traditions and sisterhood. Nearly three decades later, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are returning as Sally and Gillian Owens in Practical Magic 2, alongside Joey King, Maisie Williams, Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing. The sequel continues the Owens family's story as they confront the curse threatening their family. Visit the official Practical Magic 2 movie site

So rather than creating generic witch-themed attractions, Pinterest built experiences consumers could imagine happening inside the Owens house.

Pinterest employee Ellen Corsaro described the goal as "turning Pinterest trends into immersive, IRL experiences,"while crediting teams across Pinterest, Warner Bros. and NVE Experience Agency for bringing the activation together.

Why the Strategy Works

The smartest part of the activation is that the experience doesn't end when someone leaves the pop-up.

Someone who makes a crystal candle can later search Pinterest for candle-making ideas. Someone who receives a tarot reading might search for beginner tarot guides. Someone inspired by the apothecary can save herbal recipes, kitchen designs or DIY projects.

That creates a loop:

Pinterest trend → physical experience → social content → Pinterest searches and saves → movie awareness.

And it matches a larger shift Pinterest is seeing among younger audiences. According to its Hobbies Report, 51% of Gen Z say having a hobby contributes to their joy, while eight in 10 monthly Pinterest users say the platform motivates them to try new things.

Instead of asking consumers to simply look at another movie advertisement, Pinterest gave them something to make, touch, personalize and remember.

That's the bigger lesson for brands.

The Pinterest x Practical Magic 2 pop-up wasn't successful conceptually because it was filled with witches, candles and crystals. It worked because Pinterest identified behaviors people were already interested in and built the entertainment IP around them.

Pinterest didn't just turn a movie into a pop-up. It turned search data into an experience.
